In the September 2026 thread on where people would live if money were no object, South Kensington is named five separate times, usually by people who have rented there and left. That is unusual. Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Belgravia get named in the same thread mainly to be ruled out.

The Natural History Museum, the V and A and the Science Museum all sit on the same stretch, and the queue for the Natural History Museum runs down Cromwell Road on half term mornings. Residents do complain about it, enough that the mayor used South Kensington as his example of moving somewhere and then objecting to what is already there. Coach drop-offs on Exhibition Road are part of the same picture.

A photo of rubbish piled on a South Kensington pavement got explained quickly by people who live in the borough: most of the mansion flats have no bin store, so Kensington and Chelsea collects sacks from the kerb on two set days per address. It looks worse than it is, and it is the thing visitors notice first about the side streets.

Nobody in these threads describes feeling unsafe walking around SW7. What does come up is street fundraisers and outright fake collectors working the pavement between the station and the museums, including some who step in front of you rather than take no. Check for a charity registration number before handing over anything.

South Kensington is the rare expensive postcode that Londoners say nice things about. Ask where people would live with no budget and it comes up again and again, usually with the same reasons: the streets, the park at the top of the road, and the fact that it still feels like somewhere people live rather than a shopping district. The trade-off is that you share it with several million museum visitors a year.
