The council tax really is the lowest in the country
Anyone who complains about Westminster council tax on r/london gets corrected within minutes, and correctly. The band D charge is the lowest of any council in England by a wide margin. The counter-argument people make is that a lot of Westminster housing sits in the top bands, so the bill on a family home is still not small.

Fine in the crowd, thinner once the offices empty
Residents describe two different experiences. The tourist streets are busy and policed. Behind them, people report dealing around Vincent Square and the estates near it, and a general sense that Westminster, Embankment and the Strand have got worse over the past year or two. Several homelessness services sit around Greencoat Place and Great Peter Street, which concentrates activity on those streets.
“I think a lot of Westminster has been getting worse for it recently. I've noticed it in Victoria but an increase around Embankment/the Strand too.”on r/london, Aug 2026
More people live here than outsiders assume
Londoners from further out tend to picture Westminster as empty offices. People who live there push back: there are whole estates behind the landmarks, Peabody blocks a couple of minutes from Trafalgar Square, primary schools, neighbours who have been in the same flat for decades. It is quiet at the weekend rather than dead.

Marches and road closures come with the postcode
Whitehall, Parliament Square and Victoria Embankment are the default route for large demonstrations, which means several Saturdays a year your street is shut, buses are diverted and pubs nearby are asked to close early. State occasions do the same. Locals treat it as part of the deal rather than a shock.
